In order to measure steering torque, few strain gauges are used, while steering angle and steering speed can be measured by using one noncontact optical encoder, that has a resolution of 7200 number of pulses per rotation.
This measurement steering wheel comes in different models:
- 50 newton meter version meant for passenger cars
- 250 newton-meter version meant for trucks.
Pitch/roll angle measurement
In order to determine the pitch and roll angle, distance measurements are taken at 3 select points of the body of vehicle against the road which may be using a laser sensor.
Pitch can be defined as angle between longitudinal axis of the vehicle and projection of vehicle to the road, while roll can be defined as angle between the transversal axis of vehicle and its total projection to road.
Both pitch and roll are calculated as functions of arc tangent by using trigonometric distance relationships.
